Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 23, 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how BorderCount collects, uses, stores, and protects your data when you use our web, iOS, or Android apps. It is provided for transparency and may be updated from time to time; it is not legal advice.
What BorderCount is
BorderCount is a privacy-first day-counting app. It helps you track how many days you spend in each country or region so you can assess things like the U.S. Substantial Presence Test, Canadian provincial health-coverage minimums, US State tax laws, and the European Schengen 90/180-day rule. Your account works across web, iOS, and Android.
Data we collect
- Account information: email address, display name, optional phone number, home country or region, and report preferences.
- Trips outside your home state / province / country: entry and exit dates, country or region.
- Location events: when Bordercount records a location, we store latitude and longitude (to 6 decimal places), timestamp, and the country or region. These events are used to build a location record for each day. This data is available to you alone.
How location is collected
Location is collected in two ways:
- Manual: you tap "Mark location" at any time to mark current location.
- Automatic border-crossing detection: When enabled, the app does not stream continuous GPS or track your movement, it only collects a single location fix when a possible border crossing is detected — for example, leaving a geofence around home, a significant-location change, or the phone joining another country's mobile network — plus a once-nightly reconciliation. After location check, location services turn off. Background location ("Allow all the time") is requested to enable proper location checking. It is used solely to record which country you are in on a given day.
How we use your data
We use your data only to provide BorderCount's day-counting and compliance features, and, if you opt-in, to email you scheduled compliance reports and account or confirmation emails. We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to running the app.
How we share your data
We do not sell your personal data and we do not share it with third parties for their own purposes. We use the following service providers who process data on our behalf:
- Lovable Cloud / Supabase: hosts our backend, authentication, database, and email delivery.
- Google: provides Maps SDK to display maps and Geocoding/Places services to resolve addresses and locations.
Storage and security
Your data is stored in your own account and scoped so that you can only access your own data. Your location data includes a unique, anonymous account identifier. It does not include personal information such as name, phone number or email. The app uses only a public anonymous key and never a privileged service key. Data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS. Location records are also protected by a server-side integrity hash chain.
Your choices and rights
- Automatic tracking: you can turn it on or off at any time in Settings.
- Delete data: you can delete your trips and location data in Settings.
- Account deletion: you can permanently delete your account and all of its data from inside the app — Settings → Account → Delete account. You can also email us at support@bordercount.com.
- Access your data: you can view and download your data through the app or online when Signed In to your account.
Data retention
We keep your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete data in the app, it is removed from your account. Deleting your account from inside the app (Settings → Account → Delete account) removes your personal data permanently. If you ask us to delete it by email instead, we will do so within a reasonable time.
Children
BorderCount is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted here with an updated "Last updated" date.
